In times of vinyl shortage and production backlog, resourcefulness is key. In keeping with his well-established practice of replacing original materials with surrogates to generate new sonic experiences, Sven-Åke Johansson has devised a digital reinterpretation of the historic flexidisc in the shape of a 10inch rubber disc with engraved QR codes that let buyers access the music online. 

ABOUT THE MUSIC

The six compositions titled ‘stumps’ are based on a potential for variation with falling and rising short signals (notes). Repeating the theme four times establishes the piece and provides a solid ground for the ensuing improvisations. A simple repetition of the theme at the end rounds off the composition as a kind of return. The underlying tempi of the themes are rather calm, there is no fixed tempo but more of a free positioning. Within the improvisations the rhythm section operates according to the principle of ‘free tempo/dynamic vibration’. This produces swing.

Den sechs Kompositionen „stumps“ / „Stümpfe“ ist ein Variationspotential von fallenden und steigenden Kurzsignalen (Noten) als Thema zugrunde gelegt. Ein vierfaches Wiederholen des Themas am Anfang etabliert das Stück und ergibt ein festes Ausgangsmaterial für die folgenden Improvisationen. Das einfache Wiederholen des Themas am Ende beschließt die Komposition als eine Art Rückkehr.

Die Grundtempi der Themata sind ruhig angelegt; es besteht kein festgelegtes Tempo, mehr ein freies Platzieren. Die Rhythmusgruppe arbeitet in den Improvisationen nach dem Prinzip „freies Tempo / dynamische Schwingung“; es ergibt sich Schwung (swing).

Die Kompositionen wurden kurz vor Weihnachten 2021 fertiggestellt und während eines Gastspiels im Berliner Club Au Topsi Pohl mitgeschnitten. Sie sind mein Opus magnum unter den Kleinstbesetzungen.
