..."The music of the BBQ, though equally distant from modernist strictures, is a very different beast from the Night and Day quartet, or, indeed, from contemporaneous experiments in real-time collage like John Zorn’s Cobra. In some ways, the approach is also quite distinct from the jarringly abrupt use of genre signifiers that the Dutch ICP musicians had been dropping into free improvisations to hilarious effect since the 1960s. Johansson has described the BBQ as ‘free postmodernism’, and both parts of the equation deserve equal emphasis: postmodern in its refusal to distinguish high from low, ‘radical’ from ‘traditional’, the BBQ remained utterly committed to the idea of free improvisation as—to quote some words spoken by Carl in a later interview—‘allowing in situ almost any spontaneous decision’. Rather than disrupting the freely improvised flow with musical found objects, the referential elements in a BBQ performance (fragments of marching tunes, folk melodies, traces of straighter jazz) are part of the very fabric of the music, appearing to arise almost automatically from the players’ muscle memories and rich musical pasts."...
